HOW PHEROMONES WORK

 What are pheromones?

A pheromone is a secreted chemical factor that triggers a social response in members of the same species, in this case it mimics a “mating smell” (not the technical term) and attracts the moth directly to it.

Adult female codling moths release a sex-attractant chemical (pheromone) to attract male codling moths.

Mating disruption is a technique in which the orchard air is saturated with pheromone emitted from slow-release pheromone lures. This upsets moth communication, making it difficult for male moths to locate females. Mating disruption pheromones for Codling moth, Guava moth  Tropical Army Worm moth and Fall Army Worm moth are available from Eco Trap for both home and orchard use and, although not entirely eliminating mating, are able to delay it and reduce the number of eggs being laid. This technique is safe for non-target insects and doesn’t leave pesticide residues on the fruit.

How do pheromones work?

The pheromone lure attracts male moths disrupting breeding and reducing infestation. Pheromone lures can be used along with your solar moth trap to further increase your moth catch.

Use of targeted pheromones in this instance has the combined effectiveness of:

a) attracting codling moths to the solar trap and for those that the solar trap miss

b) helps to disrupt general mating patterns of the moth and reduces reproduction.

ECOTRAP sells Guava, Codling, Tropical Army moth and Fall Army moth pheromones which can be used along with your solar moth trap to enhance your moth catch.
